LEAVE A SPACE.... written by chika obi for the April 2018 I♡U movement.
LEAVE A SPACE
If wishes would agree to be subservient to humans, even if for a second, some fellows would have had their stories quickly rewritten. They would have take-off points, significantly elevated. There is no gainsaying the fact all fingers are not equal but then, no finger would ordinarily choose to be smaller. Some are born fair, while some are born dark. Some are born tall, while some are born short. Some are brown-eyed, while others are blue-eyed or white-eyed. Some are born ambidextrous, while others are not. With either of these traits, we can easily cope; especially within the stage called life. In fact, many fellows possessing either of these traits ,going as far as thanking God for not being like ‘others’. A mindset that can be silently lethal.
More so, while some are born with the obviously admirable traits, others are born with the traits not readily found on the wish-lists of any human. While some are born with beautifully coloured eyes, others are born with permanently impaired ones .While others are born with slender legs and hands, complimented with admirable biceps and triceps ,others are born with no limbs at all. While some are born with sonorous and mind-grabbing voices, others have no ‘no voice’at all – they can never talk coherently . With their finely made ears ,others can hear even from several miles away, while others can never pick the faintest of sounds , even sounds made by themselves – they are deaf, from medical explanations.
Yet these ‘others’, weren’t made to live in the animal kingdom. They weren’t made to reside within the domain of spirits – they were created to live with humans and like every other human .Regardless of the apparently unequal platforms nature has given to all, imbalance still remains unacceptable – at least ideally.
“Heal the world”, remains a very popular line that the Haitians will never forget; especially when the monstrous earthquake almost ended their existence, in the year 2010. But then, that statement applies to all – especially the ‘others’. Their conditions generate enough misery for them, needless it is to compound their situation, by the slightest show of apathy. The very popular limbless Dutch, Nick, who happens to be a widely-acclaimed motivational speaker once said; “I just wish things were different with me.” He was also quoted to have said; “I could choose to be angry with God ,over the things I don’t have or be happy with him, over things I do have.” No doubt, people in similar or ‘worse’ situations as his, share same opinion. What about those, so embittered as to be able to share theirs? What about those who would want to voice out theirs, but cannot do so, except for the gesturing of their hands? What about those who can’t even hear the disparaging comments we leave about them? Simply leave a space for them.
A popular speaker once said; “ If you cannot provide a miracle, just try and be one.” Regardless of your capacity, you can leave a space for the minority ‘others’. If you’re still perplexed as to what to do or how to leave a space, just ponder on the words from a popular song ; “Try a little kindness…..”.
